*Due to the ongoing nature of this report. I’ll be continually updating this post with information and links on the situation*
For over 5 years the BBC has gone behind the scenes of the production of Doctor Who. From its early days and the relaunch of Doctor Who to the departure of David Tennant and the arrival of Matt Smith. The Confidential team has been there with a 45 minute long episode that goes behind the scenes of each episode of Doctor Who.
The BBC have announced today that Doctor Who Confidential will be closing its doors permanently and this weekends episode will be the final episode of the series. While Doctor Who will continue into 2012 with its Seventh Series it will do so without Doctor Who Confidential. a BBC Spokesman spoke to the Guardian and a more detailed report can be read on their website.
The Doctor Who spin-off series, Doctor Who Confidential, has been a great show for BBC3 over the years, but our priority now is to build on original British commissions, unique to the channel.
The reason for the end of Doctor Who Confidential is mostly simple. The BBC needs to cut money in its programming and Confidential is among those to face the cut. The BBC want to shift their focus to more original programming for BBC Three like the recent launch of the tv show ‘The Fades’ and the returning ‘Being Human’ and plans to show a lot of repeats of BBC 1 shows at 7-9pm on BBC Three.
The Doctor Who Website also has a announcement regarding the end of Doctor Who Confidential
For the past seven years, Doctor Who Confidential has put you at the heart of Doctor Who, providing a unique insight into the stars, the show and the entire production.
This journey reaches a fitting finale on Saturday when Doctor Who Confidential premiers a brand new mini-adventure starring Matt Smith as the Doctor. Viewers have seen the story, Death is the Only Answer, being made, watching the entire process from script to screen. Saturday’s episode, entitled When Time Froze, also includes the ultimate feature on River Song, with Alex Kingston providing a brilliant timeline of everyone’s favourite time travelling archaeologist.
The Confidential team captured the rebirth of the show back in 2005 and for over half a decade they have given an unsurpassed, access-all-areas insight not just into Doctor Who, but the magic and mechanics of making successful drama. From an episode directed by David Tennant, to the special edition that broke the news that Matt Smith would be the Eleventh Doctor, Doctor Who Confidential has always delivered the very best in must-see behind-the-scenes action.
The final episode of Doctor Who Confidential, When Time Froze, is on BBC Three on Saturday, immediately after 6×13: The Wedding of River Song
This is the latest in a long line of cuts announced by the BBC which faces the decision to make a large amount of cuts to its programming. A situation I personally don’t agree with, the BBC is a vital British Organisation and should be given whatever support it needs. Not limited by the Tories who happen to have their pockets lined with Murdoch’s Sky/News Corporation minions.
UPDATE: A ‘Save Doctor Who Confidential’ Campaign has been launched and can be followed on Twitter. The Campaign has already recieved the support of Doctor Who writer Neil Gaiman. The Save Doctor Who Confidential Campaign has also launched a petition which can be viewed here. As of 21:27 UK Time the Petition currently has 5,791 signatures to it.
Also my thanks to Tardis Console News for pointing out this Radio Times website poll which asks ‘Do you think it was a good idea to cancel Doctor Who Confidential’ Currently as of 18:15 UK Time the poll currently stands at Yes: 6.3% 31 votes, No: 93.09% 458 votes and Doctor Who? 0.55% 3 Votes
Also a excellent video that goes into the reasons why Doctor Who Confidential should be saved has been made and can be viewed below.
